The first FDA-approved trackable pill, Otsuka's Abilify, has hit the market and now researchers and clinicians are investigating whether a similar technology can be used for opioid pills.

Chai says being able to detect a pattern in how patients are taking pills can help physicians intervene if there’s a change in that pattern: if patients are taking more pills, for example, or taking them before they go to bed at night, the most dangerous time to take opioids.

As pill trackers become more common it will be interesting to see how the data created are used to help with patient support programs.
