Vertical video was maligned for nearly the first decade of smartphone usage. If you didn't turn your phone sideways when recording something you were shunned, heckled, and sometimes stoned in the market square (well, not really -Ed.).
However, vertical videos didn’t go away because it was just so much more natural to hold the phone vertically when recording. Now, with the popularity of video on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Vine, and Snapchat the format is set to take over. Vertical video simply works better when you’re viewing on a smartphone in a news feed. The writer from MediaPost lists four reasons to embrace vertical video:
- Sometimes vertical is actually better
- Vertical video can be more cost-friendly
- You should be customizing, regardless
- There are no “rules” yet
Vertical won’t be for all video, YouTube is still a very horizontally-focused platform, but it’s coming so marketers need to be ready for it.
