The latest and greatest mobile technology isn't any good to app developers unless their audience has it. This is one place where Apple's iOS continues to trump Google's Android. It took iOS 8 only 50 days to reach 50% of traffic volumes as measured by Crittercism's mobile app performance measurement system. Also, by February 15th, the OS was at approximately 2/3 of traffic volumes – only five months after launch. Considering the substantial installed base of Apple iPhones and iPads this is a remarkable feat.

Meanwhile, Android Lollipop (the most recent release) was still under 2% of total Android traffic after 81 days in market. This has always been a problem with the Android ecosystem – the third-party hardware developers have little incentive to make their versions of the OS compatible with their older hardware so upgrades are often tied to hardware changes.
