Royal College of Physicians’ Future Healthcare Journal publishes Klick editorial piece on using technology-mediated symptom transference to cultivate increased clinical empathy for patients with neurological, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, psychiatric, and other conditions
TORONTO, ON/NEW YORK, NY – October 3, 2017 – A Klick Health perspective was today published in The Royal College of Physicians’ Future Healthcare Journal introducing healthcare practitioners to technology-mediated symptom transference. Also known as tele-empathy, the emerging field of study uses technology to enable physicians and caregivers to feel what it is like to have certain symptoms. In doing so, it aims to help reverse the trend towards decreased clinical empathy amongst physicians while improving patient outcomes.
The paper lists several technologies and applications being considered for this new area of study. Augmented reality, for example, could be used for eye disorders and psychiatric conditions while electrical stimulation could be used for dyskinesia, inflammatory bowel disease, and peripheral neuropathy in diabetes.
Electrical stimulation is already being used in tele-empathy. Earlier this year, Klick’s SymPulseTM Tele-Empathy Device was unveiled as a proof-of-concept, which transmits tremors from patients with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders to physicians and caregivers.
The device, recently profiled by Dr. Sandeep Jauhar in The New York Times, captures continuous electromyogram data from tremors and transmits it wirelessly via an electrical muscle stimulator to induce involuntary muscle activity mimicking the tremors in real time.
The tele-empathy paper in the UK-based journal, authored by Klick Medical Editor Ashley Ho, Medical Communications Director Julie Turnbull, and Klick Labs VP and Principal Investigator Yan Fossat, states, “Tele-empathy can harness the power of technology to cater to specific needs within a wide range of clinical areas, stimulating new knowledge and insights in the process. This fosters invaluable opportunities, such as the cultivation of empathy, more precise treatment titration, and more accurate treatment result predictions, benefitting physicians, caregivers and, more importantly, patients themselves.”
